Welcome to the homepage of Jinenkan Pennsylvania's Gouken Dojo! This site is designed to provide information about our dojo and Jissen Kobudo Jinenkan, founded by Fumio Manaka in 1996 after over 40 years of martial arts experience. Manaka Sensei has chosen "Unsui" (independent seeker of enlightenment) as his budo name.
The Jinenkan was founded to hand down real life budo. Jinenkan literally means "Hall of Nature" and represents Unsui Sensei's feeling of his martial arts being like the natural flow of the elements; just as water can flow around any obstacle unhindered, it can also destroy anything in its path.
Jinenkan teaches authentic samurai budo. This includes instruction in Taijutsu (unarmed fighting skills), bikenjutsu (sword arts), bo (six foot staff), jutte (truncheon), hanbo (three foot staff), tanto (knife) and others. These techniques are taught as they were hundreds of years ago, still finding practical use in today's world.
Jinenkan training places a strong emphasis on the fundamentals. Each student is expected to continually refine the basic techniques throughout their training. "Advanced" techniques might be viewed as more subtle or sophisticated applications of the "basics".
